Step 1 - Insure you are proficient.
-
Obviously, this is a test of
how safe and comfortable you are with the aircraft. It would
be wise to go up with another pilot to do a "mock" check ride. Check
to insure you can perform stalls, steep turns, ground reference maneuvers,
and various types of landings (short, crosswind, etc...). You should also
insure that your safety pilot is comfortable with assisting you in the event of
trouble such as a spin or bad landing. Ideally, a CFI would be the best choice.
-
Step 2 - Take the Form 5
written exam.
-
At your leisure you can take
the test. You will need a copy of the regs, specifically the 60-1, and there is
also a copy available at the squadron. Once you complete the test, you
can then take the
Exam Online. The questions are the
same and you will just need to copy the answers over. NOTE: This is the best
way to do this as you only get 2 chances to pass the online exam!
- Step 3 - Get copies of the
Aircraft Questionnaire and Statement of Understanding.
-
You can download blank copies
of these from the CAP Forms web site.
- Step 4 - Complete the Aircraft
Questionnaire.
-
For this, you will need the POH from the aircraft type you intend to fly, with
the POH from the actual aircraft you will be flying for your Form 5 check ride
being ideal. All the questions are straight forward and it basically makes your
more familiar with the aircraft and the POH. The statement of
understanding just requires your signature and date.
-
Step 5 - Schedule your Check ride with a check pilot.
-
See the
WMU for a list of check pilots.
-
Sign on to the Web WMU as a
member
-
Then click on the button next
to Member look up that says "by Specialties"
-
In the pull down under Pilot
Specialty select Check pilot, then click the submit button.
-
A list of check pilots and
their contact numbers will appear at the bottom of the page.
-
Step 6 - Take the Form 5 Check Ride.
-
On the day of your check ride,
you will need to insure you have all of your paperwork completed and ready for
inspection and review by the Check Ride Pilot. The top portion of your Form 5
should already be completed, and be prepared to complete the final two
questions on the written test.
Be safe and have a great flight! -
Step 7 - Make copies of your paperwork.
-
The Civil Air Patrol is a group of
volunteers, and it is obvious that the pilot folders are easily accessible.
Since it is conceivable that something could get lost in the shuffle, it is a
good practice to maintain a duplicate copy of your pilot folder at your
residence in the event something gets lost and needs replacing.
-
Step 8 - Update your Pilot Folder.
-
Before you can fly
the CAP aircraft, your pilot folder must have the following items:
-
Graded Test
-
Signed off Form 5
(Good for 1 year)
-
Signed statement of
understanding (Only needs to be signed and filed once, does not expire)
-
Copy of the
Aircraft Questionnaire
-
Copy of your Pilot
License
-
Copy of your
Medical
-
Copy of your BFR or
Wings program certificate
-
Copy of your CAP Membership ID
- Step 9
- Update your pilot records in the
WMU.
-
Your Pilot status must show as ACTIVE on the WMU in order for you
to recieve a flight release to fly CAP Aircraft.
-
Sign on to the Web WMU as a
member
-
Then click on the button that
says "Pilot Information"
-
Complete the information.
- Step 10 - Flying the CAP
Aircraft.
-
You're now a qualified CAP pilot!
Wear your wings proud, encourage others to fly, never forget the flight release
(before and after), remember to refuel after your flight, and most
importantly...
Fly Safely!
